Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area
This trip was designed to be a "recreational outing", meaning that
there were no intentions other than rest, relaxation, and enjoyment of
the natural beauty that is a part of the Big South Fork. In that
sense, the trip was a success.
Started at the Bandy Creek Campground and hiked about 6.5 miles to a
campsite on Fall Branch near the river, just below the Angel Falls
overlook. The trail leading in was easy to moderate, winding
through several long creek gorges which were very beautiful, reflecting
the unique geology of the upper Cumberland area.
We hiked back out to the Bandy Creek campground the next day, then
drove to the West end of the park to the Twin Arches trailhead. It
was a short hike to the arches, and then on to another excellent
campsite on the tip of the spur of a small ridge.
